Volunteer Opportunities
NCJW advocates locally, nationally and globally and aims to link its positions with Community Service Projects and Educational Programs. This committee works with legislators, media, community leaders, and law enforcement to effect change in public policies that impact those most vulnerable in our society. Volunteer opportunities include a writing campaign, NCJW Addresses the Issues. Our volunteers meet in public places and call, write, or email our legislators on the pressing issues of the day. Healthy Start involves ensuring all eligible children are enrolled in the state's health insurance program. Our community & legislative work: "Where did The Gun Come From?" The "I will Ask Campaign" and the annual "Play It Safe" Event promote gun safety education. Volunteer for our community work with "Plan A", the national initiative to secure and protect access to contraceptive information & options.

New Life Community, a transitional housing facility, welcomes new families every month. These items will make for an easier transition.

NCJW provides new duffel bags and back packs filled with school supplies for foster children in Cuyahoga County who are abruptly removed from their homes for reasons of abuse, neglect or imminent danger. Help us get the word out to organizations and businesses that a short term charity drive can make a huge difference in the lives of hundreds of foster children a year.
The Domestic Violence Center
NCJW offers to provide indirect and direct supports services to vulnerable women and children who are victims of domestic violence. The DVC is a safe and nurturing shelter environment which helps people back on their feet.
Done in a Day
One time projects are very valuable, they enhance our community service projects and bring our volunteers together. Our busy volunteers enjoy a one time commitment where they make a huge difference and at the same time learn more about our diversified projects. Have a pizza party or bake cookies at a domestic violence shelter, bring a meal to a transitional housing facility, do a yard clean up and bulb planting - "Done in a Day" ideas and needs are limitless.
Entertainmobile
Let us entertain you! If you have an artistic bent, join our talented teams of entertainers as they perform choreographed shows at different venues throughout the city. Or, if you'd rather have your own "troupe" or entertain as an individual, you are welcome to join Entertainmobile!
Face to Face
Face to Face is an award winning program sponsored by Shaarey Tikvah Synagogue to provide middle and high school students with an education about Judaism, the Holocaust and tolerance. Students are bused to Shaarey Tikvah for presentations. Students tour the Muesum, listen to a survivor's presentation, and view a film. The program is offered on Tuesday and Thursdays from 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM. A training session will be provided by Face to Face. Volunteers are primarily needed as docents. Volunteer commitment can be as short as one hour per month.
Friendship Circle
Twice a year, volunteers sponsor social get-togethers for chronically mentally ill clients of Jewish Family Association residing independently or in group homes. Chanukah is a favorite-, with latkes, entertainment, and presents for all. Volunteers add a special touch in planning the events.
Gun Safety Program—The "I Will ASK" Campaign
A gun in the home is a recipe for tragedy. Help prevent these unthinkable tragedies that result from a child finding a gun in the home. Working with a script, NCJW volunteers explain to greater Cleveland parent groups the need to ask questions about gun availability and safe gun storage within a home setting. A brief training program enables you to participate in this important project that helps NCJW spread the word about gun safety. This is a volunteer opportunity is for those who are available for evening programs.
Hello Israel
Volunteers use a scripted social studies presentation and visit schools with little or no Jewish students to "take" 6th graders on an imaginary trip to Israel. Training is provided. Volunteers go in teams of two. There is no discussion about either politics or religion. Memorization is not necessary. Children love seeing their names written in Hebrew and "participating" in an archaeological dig! Time commitment is flexible.
Imagination Express
Imagination Express volunteers bring life and love to children, one evening a month. Volunteers bring storytelling, drama, art projects, songs, and snacks to bring joy to homeless children and their parents who are rebuilding their lives with the help of New Life Community, a transitional housing facility.

Kids Connection
Be part of a dynamic tutoring team at Cleveland's George Washington Carver Elementary School helping children with literacy and math concepts or sharing a specific talent that would help enrich a child's life. NCJW sponsors a hike in the spring and the fall for 4th graders who may be experiencing the natural outdoors for the first time.
Magnolia Clubhouse
Our newest project is housed at Magnolia Clubhouse, a vital community of growth, hope and opportunity. The mission is to ensure that people coping with chronic mental illness are respected co-workers, neighbors, and friends. Through a grant from the Mayer-Haber Fund of the Jewish Community Federation, NCJW volunteers will help the Clubhouse expand their existing operation to accommodate young adults (18-25) with chronic mental illness. Many have aged out of the foster care system and literally have no place to turn. Our volunteers bring an awareness of this important issue to the community as well as becoming mentors to the young adults.
NCJW/Montefiore Hospice
Trained volunteers provide assistance to terminally ill patients. Support is also offered to caregivers. Volunteers also assist staff in record keeping and special projects. Together with Montefiore Hospice staff, our volunteers help plan an annual memorial service. Flexible time commitment.
Partners In Reading
Give me a lap. Then tell me a story. I can learn to read the world! Partners In Reading helps enhance parents' and extended adult family members' involvement in reading with their kindergarten and first-grade children. Volunteers also work with expectant and new parents who are high school students. A "Lunch Bunch" book discussion group includes volunteers and fifth-grade girls. Volunteers meet monthly to dialogue with participants and share ideas about reading. A planning meeting once a month as well as the actual presentation makes this a twice-a-month commitment.
P.E.I. (Public Education Initiative) Jewish Community Federation
PEI pairs volunteers with students in the Cleveland Municipal School District. Each tutoring pair focuses on building reading skills and developing a special tutor/student mentoring relationship at one of five partner schools: Audubon, Bolton, Buckeye-Woodland, Buhrer and the Juvenile Detention Center. Volunteers follow a structured reading program called the 100 Book Challenge. Training is provided. Coordinators are at each school for limited hours to meet, greet, and assist volunteers. Volunteers are asked to commit to one hour per week during the school day at a time of their convenience at one of the schools, October through May.
Phone Friends ( JFSA)
Volunteers will be paired with adults with mental retardation and developmental disabilities living in group homes or independent living sites who no longer have living relatives. Talking on a weekly basis can be a lifeline for those who do not have an opportunity to go into the community to develop his or her own personal relationships. A special call to ask a person about their activities or to just wish them a good day will bring simple joy into the life of an individual with special needs.
Reading Buddies
This program is a partnership between the JCC, Prospect Elementary School in East Cleveland and NCJW. First and second grade students are given the opportunity to share their reading accomplishments with a volunteer buddy. Frequently the students establish very special relationships with their buddies and friendships develop. The program is held one morning each month during the school year.
